BIOGRAPHY

Sarmīte Malīņa was born in 1960 in Akniste, Latvia. She creates installations, performances, books and graphic design works, often involving other Latvian artists such as Ojārs Pētersons, Andris Breze, Juris Boiko and Aija Zarina. Her first performance, Cages (1987), coincides with an important moment of awakening for Latvian contemporary art; at that time, she was working with Oļegs Tillbergs and Sergejs Davidovs. She was responsible for the design section for Avots and has collaborated with the magazine Diena.
Kristaps Kalns is a photographer born in 1981 in Latvia. Since the beginning of his career, he collaborated with different newspapers, including Diena for which he realized different cover images and illustrations. In 2005, he exhibited at the Latvian National Museum of Art with Museum Time, a project that brings together a series of photographs taken on the occasion of the museum’s centenary.
Over the past 15 years, Kalns and Malina have constantly worked together on several projects and, with the work Love never dies they were nominated for the first Vilhelms Purvītis Prize (2009). Recently, they presented the work I Can’t Grasp It on the occasion of the project Notes on Self-Evident Things. Model Exhibition at the Latvian National Museum of Art (2016), Riga.
